He was born on the 5th of April, 1947, in Miskolc. Married, his wife is a legal adviser, they have two children.

He graduated the II Rákóczi Ferenc High School in 1965. Takes his doctorate in law at Eötvös Lóránd University in 1972. Candidate for lawyer, then lawyer in a lawyer’s team since 1974. Member of the Association of Christian Intellectuals, the Piarist Students' Union, the Society of Paneuropean Union, the St. George Order of Knighthood and the Civil Casino of Buda.

Joins the MDF (Hungarian Democratic Forum) in 1988. Takes part in the trilateral political agreement negotiations in 1989. Besides party president he is law expert and person responsible for election in 1989-1990. In the same years is member of National Election Committee. In spring 1993 elected into the National Committee of MDF. Member of national presidency between February and September 1994 and then between 1996-2001. Chairman of National Ethical Committee in 1995-1996. Works in the II District’s committee since 1996 and in Budapest’s committee since 1998.

Member of Parliament since 1990. (1990 and 1994: nationwide (general) list; 1998 and 2002: Budapest II electoral district). Minister of Justice between 24 May 1990 and 14 July 1994. Member of MDF presidency between June 1990 and March 1996. Deputy of fraction-leader between 1996 and 1998. Fraction-leader between 1998 and 2002. Defends his individual mandate (seat) in II District of Budapest. Leader of the representatives of Democratic Forum between 15 May (the formation of Parliament) and 11 November 2002. Observer in the People's Party fraction of the European Parliament between 24 March 2003 and 13 June 2004, then fully entitled/qualified member just here. Joins the Lakitelek work-team on 21 June 2004. Independent representative since his exclusion, keeping his committee-leader function. Six months afterwards joins the opposition FIDESZ fraction. Obtains mandate (seat) in Budapest II electoral district during the parliamentary election of year 2006. Member of constitutional and judicial committee since 30 May 2006.
